Assam’s Fast Track Court recently listened to the bail request of Shekharjyoti Goswami, a former bandmate of renowned Assamese singer Zubeen Garg and a suspect in the investigation related to the singer’s death. The court has postponed its decision on Goswami’s bail plea and scheduled the verdict announcement for May 28.
Goswami, who has been in judicial custody for several months, did not appear in court during the hearing. His defense argued for bail due to the extended period of detention, while the prosecution opposed it, emphasizing the case’s significance.
The case revolves around the demise of Zubeen Garg, who passed away on September 19 last year while swimming near Lazarus Island in Singapore. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by Assam Police CID conducted a thorough investigation and filed a chargesheet in December, naming seven accused individuals, with four facing murder charges.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma previously labeled the case as a “plain and simple murder” in a state Assembly discussion, highlighting the government’s stance. Despite a separate investigation by Singapore Police concluding no foul play, Assam authorities maintain that it won’t impact the ongoing trial in the state.
The case has garnered significant public and political interest, with the upcoming court ruling on the bail plea anticipated as a crucial phase in the legal process.
