With just two days left for the grand Bagurumba Dohou event, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that nearly 10,000 artistes will perform the iconic Bagurumba dance in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The traditional Bodo musical instruments like Sifung, Kham, and Serja will fill the air with soul-stirring rhythms, promising a unique cultural experience. This event is not only significant for the Bodo community but also a matter of pride for Assam and the entire nation.
PM Modi is scheduled to visit Assam for two days starting January 17, where he will participate in various activities. Bagurumba, known as the “butterfly dance,” holds immense cultural importance in Assam and is deeply ingrained in the spiritual and cultural life of the Bodo people. Symbolizing harmony with nature, the dance, traditionally performed by young women, celebrates themes of fertility, peace, and joy.
The graceful movements of the dance, resembling the flight of butterflies, signify the community’s strong connection with the natural world. Bagurumba is closely linked with the Bwisagu festival, which marks the Bodo New Year and the onset of spring. Evolving over time, the dance has transformed from a community ritual into a symbol of Bodo identity and cultural heritage, accompanied by music from traditional instruments like Sifung, Kham, and Serja.
The upcoming Bagurumba Dohou is anticipated to be a grand affair, showcasing Assam’s rich indigenous heritage on a national stage with thousands of artists performing together. This event underscores the efforts to preserve and promote traditional art forms, ensuring their continuity for future generations. As Assam readies for this celebration, the event is poised to leave a lasting impact, emphasizing the state’s vibrant cultural diversity and promoting unity through tradition.
