The Assam government unveiled plans to seek UNESCO recognition for key cultural and historical assets like Bihu, Majuli’s Vaishnavite tradition, and Rangpur in Sivasagar. Finance Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah, during the Budget presentation, highlighted the state’s goal to secure UNESCO inscriptions across various heritage categories to safeguard Assam’s distinct legacy and enhance its global standing. Following the Charaideo Moidams’ UNESCO World Heritage Site inscription, the government eyes similar recognition for other sites to boost heritage conservation and promote cultural tourism.
The state’s conservation efforts will extend to expediting the Rang Ghar Conservation Project and enhancing the preservation and visitor facilities at Kareng Ghar, a significant Ahom-era monument. Emphasizing Vaishnavite heritage preservation, the government pledged support for the comprehensive development of Madhupur Satra, linked to saint-reformer Srimanta Sankardeva. This initiative includes heritage conservation, pilgrim facility upgrades, and cultural infrastructure expansion.
To institutionalize monastic traditions’ preservation, the Assam Satra Commission will be established and empowered. Additionally, plans include organizing a grand Bihu celebration in New Delhi, promoting Assam’s cultural identity nationally. The government also announced financial aid for producing films on historical figures like Lachit Barphukan and Swahid Kushal Konwar, along with hosting events to honor Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika. These endeavors align with the state’s strategy to conserve Assam’s heritage and establish it as a premier cultural and heritage tourism destination.
