Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced plans for a high-budget biographical film on legendary Ahom commander Lachit Borphukan. The government aims to showcase the hero’s story to audiences in India and beyond. Discussions are underway with filmmaker Aditya Dhar for this Bollywood-scale project.

Sarma mentioned during a Facebook Live session that the film would portray the life and achievements of the 17th-century military strategist. Lachit Borphukan led the Ahom army to a significant victory over the Mughal forces in the Battle of Saraighat in 1671. The Chief Minister is set to meet Aditya Dhar in August to delve into the project’s specifics.

While the talks are in the early stages, Sarma emphasized the government’s commitment to producing a top-notch biopic. If Dhar is unavailable, other filmmakers will be considered to ensure the film’s grandeur. The primary goal is to create a world-class movie that truly reflects Borphukan’s exceptional legacy.

The proposed film not only seeks to pay tribute to the iconic Ahom general but also aims to showcase Assam’s rich historical heritage to a broader national and international audience. If the project materializes, it would mark the first Bollywood-scale feature film supported by the Assam government on Lachit Borphukan’s life. Widely respected in Assam, Borphukan is revered for his bravery, patriotism, and military acumen. His pivotal role in the Battle of Saraighat against the Mughals is a cherished episode in the state’s history.
