Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya highlighted the crucial role of voters in strengthening India’s democracy during the 16th National Voters’ Day celebrations in Dispur. He stressed the significance of informed and active citizen participation for ensuring free and fair elections. The Governor commended the observance of National Voters’ Day as a reminder of citizens’ collective responsibility in a democratic system.
January 25 marks a historic day as the Election Commission of India was established on this date in 1950, a day before the Constitution came into effect. Acharya underscored the importance of citizen engagement, stating that voters are the backbone of democracy. He emphasized that an aware and participative electorate strengthens democratic institutions and promotes accountability.
The theme for this year, “My India, My Vote,” signifies the rights and responsibilities of citizens in a democratic society. Governor Acharya urged citizens, especially first-time voters, to exercise their franchise and motivate others to do the same. He referenced Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call to new voters, emphasizing that voting is a demonstration of self-respect and commitment to the nation.
