Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya appointed BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma as the Chief Minister of Assam under Article 164(1) of the Indian Constitution. Sarma is scheduled to be sworn in at 11.40 a.m. on May 12 at the Veterinary College Field in Guwahati. The appointment was made by the Governor in accordance with the powers granted under Article 164(1).
Sarma met with the Governor earlier in the day to stake claim to form the government after being elected as the leader of the BJP Legislature Party and the NDA alliance in Assam. Senior BJP leader J.P. Nadda, along with Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, attended the BJP Legislature Party meeting as central observers. Nadda subsequently announced Sarma as the leader of the NDA Legislature Party.
The BJP-led NDA, along with alliance partners like the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), secured a significant victory in the recent Assam Assembly elections. This victory paved the way for Sarma to serve as Chief Minister for a second consecutive term. The swearing-in ceremony is expected to be attended by senior BJP leaders, NDA Chief Ministers, party supporters, and workers.
