Assam has launched the “e-Zero FIR” initiative, making it one of the first states in India to adopt an automated system that converts cyber financial crime complaints from the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP) and the 1930 cyber helpline into First Information Reports (FIRs). Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that this move aims to ensure swift police intervention, seamless case registration, and quicker recovery of funds lost to cyber frauds. The initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of creating a “Cyber Secure Bharat” and bolstering the nation’s response to the escalating threat of online financial crimes.
The new mechanism in Assam allows for jurisdiction-free and hassle-free registration of cyber crime cases, eliminating delays caused by procedural requirements and territorial constraints. It is designed to expedite police action and enhance the chances of reclaiming defrauded funds before they are dispersed through various accounts. Cases of cyber financial fraud involving amounts exceeding Rs 10 lakh will be automatically converted into zero FIRs, ensuring prompt investigation and action regardless of the complaint’s initial registration location.
Chief Minister Sarma credited Union Home Minister Amit Shah for guiding the initiative and commended the Assam Police for the efficient implementation of the system. With cyber fraud on the rise in India, the e-zero FIR system is expected to fortify Assam’s cyber policing framework and provide increased protection to citizens against online financial scams.
