Assam Minister and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) president Atul Bora stated that no one should face harassment based on language, affirming that illegal foreigners will be treated as such under the law. Addressing reporters during the Assam Legislative Assembly’s Budget Session, Bora clarified the government’s stance amidst discussions on Assamese language and illegal immigration. He emphasized that every Assam resident has the right to speak Assamese without fear of discrimination.
Bora highlighted the government’s efforts to promote and preserve the Assamese language, ensuring that linguistic issues do not create unnecessary divides among communities. Regarding illegal immigration, he underscored that the legal status of foreigners remains unchanged regardless of the language they speak. Bora emphasized the importance of adhering to legal procedures in dealing with illegal immigrants.
The AGP leader’s comments come amid a political debate on linguistic identity and the detection of illegal Bangladeshi nationals in Assam. The government’s crackdown on illegal infiltration has sparked discussions, with assurances that genuine Indian citizens need not worry about the verification process. While promoting Assamese as part of the state’s cultural identity, the government continues to pursue legal action against illegal immigrants within the framework of existing laws.
Bora’s statement is expected to contribute to the ongoing political dialogue, focusing on language, identity, and illegal immigration.
