In a significant move before the Assam Assembly elections, State Minister Nandita Gorlosa has switched to the Congress party as she was denied a BJP ticket. She will now run from the Haflong constituency.
The Congress party officially declared her candidacy, with General Secretary Nirmal Langthasa stepping aside to make way for Gorlosa in the greater public interest. Gorlosa, the current Haflong MLA, made the switch after the BJP nominated newcomer Rupali Langthasa for the seat.
Gorlosa’s switch is seen as crucial in Dima Hasao district, where she has established a strong presence over the past five years. Congress praised her for consistently advocating for district issues and maintaining her political stance.
The party criticized the BJP for not granting her a ticket, suggesting that this decision did not align with the concerns of indigenous tribal communities. Congress emphasized its commitment to protecting Assam’s people, identity, and future.
Senior Congress leader Jitendra Singh Alwar highlighted that leaders dedicated to Assam’s welfare are joining the party. He lauded Gorlosa as a prominent voice from Dima Hasao who remained resolute in her beliefs despite challenges. Alwar accused the BJP government of neglecting tribal welfare and favoring corporate interests.
Gorlosa formally joined Congress in the presence of Nirmal Langthasa, who endorsed her candidacy after withdrawing from the race. This development is poised to escalate the electoral competition in Haflong, a crucial constituency in Assam’s hill district region.
