Assam Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah has called for public cooperation and increased vigilance in response to severe waterlogging in various parts of Guwahati due to heavy overnight rainfall. The downpour, starting from Sunday evening and continuing late into the night, caused widespread flooding in key areas, disrupting normal life. Roads in multiple localities were submerged, leading to significant traffic congestion and stranding commuters for hours.
Highlighting the gravity of the situation, the minister emphasized that the unexpected and intense rainfall had submerged many parts of Guwahati, impacting daily activities. Authorities are working tirelessly to manage the situation, urging citizens to stay alert and assist in the efforts. Major roads and low-lying areas bore the brunt of the flooding, with water levels rising considerably in several areas.
The flooding affected crucial stretches, including parts of the city’s main routes, hampering vehicular movement and public transport services. Two-wheelers and smaller vehicles were particularly impacted by the inundation. In response to public safety concerns, the district administration ordered the closure of all educational institutions within the Guwahati Municipal Corporation area for the day, encompassing both government and private schools and colleges.
Emergency response teams have been mobilized to address the situation, focusing on clearing clogged drains and restoring normalcy. The incident has once again underscored the city’s vulnerability to heavy pre-monsoon showers, raising alarms about drainage infrastructure. Despite ongoing restoration efforts, several areas remained waterlogged on Monday morning, posing risks to residents and commuters.
Authorities have advised against unnecessary travel and urged caution in flood-affected zones. Continuous monitoring of water levels and weather conditions is in place, with decisions being made based on the evolving situation. Restoration work is actively underway as authorities strive to mitigate the impact of the flooding.
