Assam Water Resources Minister Sushanta Borgohain emphasized the government’s commitment to cracking down on corruption and substandard work in embankment and flood-control projects. Borgohain warned that even influential contractors would face severe consequences if found engaging in malpractice. The Water Resources Department is actively monitoring anti-erosion and flood-protection initiatives statewide, ready to take legal action, blacklist contractors, and impose penalties on wrongdoers.
Concerns raised on social media about erosion-control measures and temporary embankment works during the monsoon season were acknowledged by Borgohain. He clarified that the use of geobags and other temporary protective measures aims to prevent immediate damage from floodwaters and erosion. These interventions are temporary and serve as emergency safeguards during the peak flood season, not permanent solutions.
The minister highlighted that post-monsoon, permanent erosion-control and river-management projects are planned, especially from November onwards when weather conditions are conducive for long-term engineering solutions. Borgohain assured that the government maintains strict oversight over all projects, emphasizing a “zero per cent compromise” on quality standards. Transparency, accountability, and durability in flood-control infrastructure remain top priorities for the state government in protecting vulnerable regions of Assam.
