Assam achieved a significant environmental milestone by planting more than 1.02 crore saplings in a single-day greening initiative. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised the women associated with Self-Help Groups (SHGs) for leading this effort. The plantation drive, which lasted over eight hours, saw active participation from Assam’s ‘Nari Shakti’.
Official reports revealed that a total of 1,02,35,632 saplings were planted across Assam during the campaign. The event witnessed the involvement of 35,34,746 registered SHG members. Nagaon district had the highest participation, with 2,35,478 SHG members planting 5,25,493 saplings.
Barpeta district took the lead by planting 5,54,666 saplings, followed by Golaghat and Biswanath with 5,36,590 and 5,36,000 saplings respectively. Dhubri contributed 5,12,193 saplings, while Udalguri and Kamrup districts planted 4,61,500 and 4,46,968 saplings respectively.
Lakhimpur, Sonitpur, and Morigaon also made significant contributions by planting over three lakh saplings each. The plantation drive was part of Assam’s broader green initiatives to enhance the state’s green cover and promote environmental conservation. It aimed to encourage community participation in climate action initiatives.
Officials highlighted the enthusiastic involvement of women-led Self-Help Groups from both urban and rural areas in this large-scale plantation campaign. The government expects this initiative to not only improve the state’s ecological balance but also raise awareness about sustainable environmental practices at the grassroots level. The plantation data will be verified and documented as part of Assam’s ongoing green mission.
