Assam Police apprehended a suspected member of the banned militant group United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) in Sivasagar district. The arrested individual, identified as Rontu Asom alias Biren Chetia, was found with arms, ammunition, and explosives in his possession.
The operation, conducted in the Palengi area in Dimow, was based on specific intelligence inputs about the movement of the ULFA-I cadre. Security personnel seized a pistol, live ammunition, and grenades from the suspect during the search operation. The arrested militant is believed to have connections with the insurgent group’s operational network in Upper Assam.
Authorities have taken the suspect into custody for further questioning to determine if he was involved in regrouping sleeper cells or aiding the movement of weapons in the region. Investigations are ongoing to establish any potential links the accused may have with other active members of the outfit.
The arrest is part of the heightened anti-insurgency efforts by Assam Police and security agencies against ULFA-I in the state. Security forces are intensifying surveillance and search operations in Upper Assam districts to counter the group’s attempts to revive activities and recruit local youths.
