Assam Police conducted a significant operation in Guwahati, seizing approximately 37 kg of gold valued at nearly Rs 55 crore and apprehending one individual. The arrested person, identified as Akshay Bhansore from Maharashtra’s Sangli district, is under investigation at Latasil Police Station. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Sambhavi Mishra mentioned that the gold seizure resulted from a targeted police action following specific information. The confiscated gold is currently undergoing scrutiny as part of the ongoing inquiry.
Authorities revealed that the accused, Bhansore, had relocated from Maharashtra and had been living in Guwahati’s Gandhi Basti area for about two years. Suspicions arose that he might have been serving as a courier responsible for transporting gold shipments between locations. The investigation aims to establish the gold’s ownership, its intended purpose, and potentially connected individuals. Investigators are delving into the financial records and communications of the accused to identify any accomplices in the operation.
The focus of the probe extends to tracing the gold’s source, identifying its intended recipients, and determining whether this seizure is linked to a broader interstate gold-smuggling network. Assam Police are not ruling out additional arrests as the investigation progresses. This recent gold confiscation ranks among the largest recoveries by Assam Police, reflecting intensified efforts to combat organized smuggling and illicit trade networks in the Northeast region. Law enforcement agencies have heightened intelligence-driven operations against organized crimes, including smuggling of gold and narcotics, across the state.
Collaboration with other investigative bodies is ongoing to verify the origin of the seized consignment and unravel the broader network involved in its movement. Further details are expected to surface as the investigation advances.
