The Assam Rifles and the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) collaborated in Tripura to confiscate methamphetamine tablets valued at over Rs 16 crore. Acting on specific intelligence, the joint operation led to the arrest of a suspected drug peddler in Teliamura, Khowai district. A significant amount of approximately two lakh methamphetamine tablets, also known as Yaba tablets, were found in a pick-up vehicle with a Tripura registration number.
The arrested individual, identified as Raju Deb, a 44-year-old resident of Jalilpur in West Tripura, along with the seized contraband and the vehicle, has been handed over to the DRI for further investigation and legal procedures. The operation highlights the commitment of the Assam Rifles and the DRI to combat narcotics trafficking and maintain regional security.
Authorities suspect that the drugs were smuggled from Myanmar, passing through Mizoram and southern Assam before entering Tripura for potential smuggling into Bangladesh. The porous borders of Mizoram and Tripura make the region susceptible to cross-border drug trafficking and other illicit activities. Myanmar’s Chin State is a key hub for trafficking various illegal goods, including methamphetamine tablets, which are a banned substance in India.
