At Nungshang Kong in Manipur’s Ukhrul district, a paramilitary force vehicle was ambushed by a suspected Naga armed group, leaving two Assam Rifles personnel critically injured. The incident occurred when the patrol party was attacked by unidentified Naga armed assailants near the Nungshang Kong bridge, about 16 km east of Ukhrul Police Station.
Preliminary reports indicate that two personnel sustained severe injuries during the ambush. An exchange of fire persisted in the area for hours, hindering a police team from Ukhrul Police Station from reaching the site promptly. Consequently, details such as casualties and the attackers’ identity could not be immediately verified.
Local villagers reported heavy gunfire and explosions lasting nearly two hours in the vicinity, approximately 17 km from the Ukhrul district headquarters. The firing prompted farmers working in nearby paddy fields to seek safety, causing panic in the surrounding villages.
Manipur Home Minister Konthoujam Govindas Singh denounced the attack on the Assam Rifles personnel, expressing deep sorrow over the convoy ambush. He emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and harmony in the state, extending prayers for the injured personnel’s swift recovery. The Minister affirmed confidence in the security forces’ commitment to bringing the perpetrators to justice in compliance with the law, urging unity for peace, security, and Manipur’s well-being.
The ambush occurred amidst ongoing security operations in Manipur, with central and state security forces intensifying vigilance in both valley regions and hill districts to curb militant activities and restore normalcy.
