The Assam Rifles conducted two successful operations in Mizoram, seizing Myanmar-smuggled foreign cigarettes and recovering arms and ammunition. In the first operation in Aizawl district, they recovered a pistol, live rounds, and fired cartridge cases, showcasing their operational readiness. The recovered items and the individual apprehended were handed over to the Aizawl Police for further investigation.
In another operation in the Zokhawsang area, the Assam Rifles seized foreign cigarettes worth around Rs 42.9 lakh and apprehended a smuggler. They also confiscated a vehicle used for transporting the contraband. The seized items and the individual were handed over to the Customs Preventive Force in Aizawl for legal procedures. These successful operations underscore the Assam Rifles’ commitment to combating illegal smuggling activities in Mizoram.
Mizoram’s strategic location with porous borders has made it a hotspot for drug and contraband trafficking. The state shares long, unfenced borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh, facilitating the smuggling of substances like methamphetamine tablets and heroin. Mizoram’s vigilance is crucial in curbing such illegal activities, especially in districts like Champhai, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Hnahthial, Saitual, and Serchhip.
