The Assam Rifles, in collaboration with other law enforcement agencies in Mizoram, have confiscated foreign-origin cigarettes valued at over Rs 11.25 crore. Additionally, they recovered an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) and detained a suspected smuggler and a Myanmar-based militant. Acting on specific intelligence, a joint operation was launched at Zemabawk North in Aizawl district, leading to the seizure of a significant quantity of illegally imported cigarettes. The contraband, suspected to have been smuggled through Champhai district along the India-Myanmar border, included 467 cartons and two loose cartons of various tobacco products.
During another operation in the Seling area of Aizawl district, security forces uncovered a potent IED and apprehended Yening Ku, a Myanmar-based militant, who was allegedly trying to transport the explosive device illegally. The joint team also found an antenna component and underground militant uniform items in his possession. These successful operations underscore the Assam Rifles’ operational efficiency and intelligence-driven approach in combating smuggling and illegal activities along the India-Myanmar border. Myanmar’s Chin State has been a significant transit point for smuggling various contraband into India through Mizoram’s border-linked districts.
