Assam Legislative Assembly Speaker Ranjeet Kumar Dass expressed optimism about bringing the iconic 16th-century Assamese textile, Vrindavani Vastra, back to the state for public display. Efforts are underway to showcase another rare Assamese textile currently housed in a museum in Paris. Dass mentioned that the initiative to repatriate the Vrindavani Vastra has garnered strong support from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
The Speaker highlighted that this endeavor has been a long-standing pursuit and now, with the Chief Minister’s backing, steps have been taken to bring the Vrindavani Vastra from the Victoria and Albert Museum in the UK to Assam for exhibition. The people of Assam have eagerly awaited the opportunity to witness this priceless textile in their home state. Dass expressed confidence that by 2027, the Vrindavani Vastra would be accessible for public viewing in Assam.
The Vrindavani Vastra, a masterpiece commissioned by the 16th-century Vaishnavite saint Srimanta Sankardeva, is considered a significant cultural treasure of Assam. Woven with intricate silk depicting scenes from Lord Krishna’s life, the textile is a blend of religious devotion and artistic excellence. Efforts by the Assam government aim to preserve and promote the state’s rich cultural heritage through initiatives like showcasing this historic fabric.
