The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) chief adviser, Samujjal Bhattacharya, strongly criticized the recent Nalbari incident where a young girl was killed and another critically injured in an attack. Bhattacharya expressed deep concern over public safety in Assam, labeling the incident as tragic and shocking. The attack occurred as the girls were returning home, with one girl losing her life and the other undergoing treatment at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital.
The incident, which occurred near Gangapur in the Nalbari district, resulted in the death of 19-year-old Madhurjya Barman and left 18-year-old Mridumudra Deka severely injured. The main accused, Roz Ali, died during a police encounter in the Mukalmua area while trying to escape arrest. Mridumudra Deka, the injured girl, is currently receiving medical care at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital.
According to the police, the girls were attacked while traveling on a scooter by Roz Ali and another accused, Ashik Ali. Following the incident, a search operation was initiated to locate the suspects. Samujjal Bhattacharya criticized the deteriorating law and order situation in the state, questioning the government and police’s effectiveness in ensuring public safety. He emphasized the public outrage over the incident and emphasized the need to address such crimes promptly.
BJP MLA Jayanta Mallabaruah from Nalbari mentioned that the state government would take a firm stance against incidents related to “love jihad” and confirmed ongoing police investigations to determine if more individuals were involved in the attack.
