Assam’s Majuli Island faced connectivity disruptions due to rising floodwaters, leading to the suspension of all ferry services between Majuli and Jorhat indefinitely. The Inland Water Transport Department took this step after ferry ramps at Kamalabari and Aphalamukh ghats were submerged, posing navigation risks. The Ro-Pax ferry service to Nimati Ghat was already suspended earlier due to worsening river conditions.
The halt in ferry operations from Kamalabari and Aphalamukh severely impacted transport between Majuli, the largest river island in India, and the mainland. Thousands of daily commuters, students, traders, and patients relying on these services were affected. The submerged ramps and damaged approach road at the ferry terminals have cut off access to the jetty, exacerbating the situation.
Authorities advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel and await official notifications before attempting river crossings. The decision to suspend ferry services was a precautionary measure due to strong river currents, submerged infrastructure, and floating debris in the Brahmaputra, posing significant risks. The flood situation in Assam worsened, with one reported fatality in Sivasagar district, bringing the state’s flood-related death toll this year to five.
