Aston Villa Women midfielder Lucy Staniforth has declared her retirement from professional football after a distinguished 16-year career. Staniforth, aged 33, will conclude her time at the end of the current season.
Having joined Villa in January 2023 from Manchester United, Staniforth swiftly established herself in the team’s midfield, contributing significantly to their performance. She played a crucial role in 17 matches during the latter part of the 22/23 season, aiding Villa in achieving their best-ever Women’s Super League finish and scoring her first goal in a notable 6-2 triumph over Brighton & Hove Albion.
Throughout the following three seasons, despite facing injury challenges, Staniforth made 38 additional appearances for Villa, playing a key role in victories against teams like Tottenham Hotspur, Crystal Palace, and Leicester City.
Staniforth commenced her football journey with Sunderland, debuting at the age of 16. She played a pivotal role in the team’s success, contributing to their FA Women’s Premier League Northern Division title and reaching the FA Cup final.
In a statement to BBC Sport, Staniforth expressed her excitement about the decision to retire, emphasizing her contentment with her career achievements and personal growth beyond football. She also represented England at various levels before earning her senior cap and participating in the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Aston Villa’s Director of Women’s Football, Marisa Ewers, lauded Staniforth’s contributions, acknowledging her as a valuable player and individual within the club. Ewers expressed the club’s gratitude for Staniforth’s presence and wished her success in her future endeavors.
