Australia’s coach, Shelley Nitschke, believes that Annabel Sutherland is prepared to handle a crucial finishing role in the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. Sutherland’s versatility is seen as a valuable asset for the defending runners-up in England. The team will kick off its World Cup preparations with warm-up matches against South Africa in Arundel starting Sunday.
Australia, no longer the defending champions, will face South Africa in their tournament opener on June 13. Nitschke highlighted the importance of finding the team’s best lineup and emphasized Sutherland’s potential batting role. Despite excelling in higher batting positions in other formats, Sutherland has often batted at No. 7 or 8 in T20Is.
Nitschke expressed confidence in Sutherland’s adaptability, stating that she can excel in various roles within the team. Sutherland, a recipient of consecutive Belinda Clark Awards, opted out of previous tournaments to mentally and physically prepare for the World Cup. The upcoming warm-up matches are crucial for Australia to regain momentum and rhythm, with Sophie Molineux leading the team in Alyssa Healy’s absence.
Nitschke confirmed that Molineux is expected to bowl fully during warm-up games as she recovers from a back injury. Additionally, preparations include Phoebe Litchfield practicing wicketkeeping in case of an injury to Beth Mooney. Australia’s management is closely monitoring English conditions through the ongoing T20 Blast to strategize effectively for the tournament.
