Travis Head’s 163 and Steven Smith’s unbeaten 129 led Australia to a commanding position in the fifth Ashes Test, with the hosts reaching 518/7 at stumps on Day 3, securing a 134-run lead over England at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
Head, scoring his 12th Test century at a brisk pace, and Smith, who remained solid throughout, guided Australia after England’s first-innings total of 384. Head’s impressive performance was supported by Michael Neser, who provided valuable partnership before falling to Brydon Carse.
Despite England’s efforts, including missed opportunities, Australia continued to dominate, adding 115 runs for the loss of just one wicket in the first session. Head’s departure after lunch, dismissed by Jacob Bethell, was followed by Khawaja and Smith’s partnership, with Smith eventually reaching his 37th Test century.
Australia’s lower order, including Beau Webster, contributed significantly, with Smith remaining unbeaten at 129 by the end of the day, while Webster was batting at 48. With a 134-run lead, Australia is in a strong position heading into the next day of play.
