Head coach Andrew McDonald expressed caution about making significant changes for the series finale, emphasizing the importance of securing valuable ICC World Test Championship points. Despite holding a commanding 3-1 lead, the Australian team is determined to bounce back from a recent defeat to England in the Boxing Day Test.
McDonald highlighted the team’s focus on the World Test Championship, stressing the significance of each match and the selection of the best team based on the playing surface and opponents. He confirmed Usman Khawaja’s presence in the upcoming Sydney Test, dispelling rumors of the veteran batter’s retirement from international cricket.
Khawaja, who faced setbacks due to back spasms during the Ashes series, has showcased strong performances, earning praise from McDonald for his contributions. The coach assured that Khawaja’s form justifies his selection for the upcoming Test match, scheduled to begin on January 4.
McDonald also hinted at potential changes in the team composition, considering spinner Todd Murphy and all-rounder Beau Webster for the Sydney Test. The coach acknowledged the selection dilemma and the need to assess various options to strengthen the team for the upcoming match.
