Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong emphasized the Quad nations’ desire for a robust and efficient alliance to maintain momentum and focus on delivering results. Speaking at the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi, Wong highlighted the shared vision for a free, open, peaceful, stable, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region. She underscored the importance of cooperation among the four sovereign nations, acknowledging their alignment of interests and commitment to working together.
Wong commended the Quad’s achievements in responding to natural disasters, supporting affected communities, collaborating on critical infrastructure like undersea cables, enhancing maritime security, and cooperating on critical minerals. Emphasizing the collective goal of a peaceful and prosperous region, she expressed determination to strengthen the Quad further. Wong also praised India’s regional role and the significance of the meeting held in the world’s largest democracy.
Referring to previous Quad meetings, Wong recalled External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s emphasis on ensuring freedom of choice for Indo-Pacific nations regarding security and sovereign interests. She reiterated Australia’s commitment to the partnership, emphasizing the critical role of the Quad in addressing regional challenges and shaping the future. Wong highlighted the pressing need for cooperation in the face of a challenging strategic environment and economic pressures.
