Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, in a meeting with PM Narendra Modi in Melbourne, expressed worries about China’s recent launch of an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) into the South Pacific. Both leaders emphasized the importance of peace, security, and stability in the Indo-Pacific region, highlighting shared interests between Australia and India in maintaining regional harmony. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed the discussion and the intention to enhance cooperation to uphold peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific area.
The launch of a Chinese nuclear-powered submarine missile toward the Pacific has raised concerns among various nations in the region. Australia and New Zealand have both reacted to the missile test, with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong labeling it as “destabilising” and New Zealand expressing deep concerns over the use of nuclear-capable weapons. This incident follows a similar 2024 test-firing of an ICBM by China into the South Pacific, indicating a recurring pattern of behavior.
New Zealand’s Foreign Minister Winston Peters highlighted the concerning nature of China’s actions, stating that such launches contribute to regional instability. Taiwan’s Presidential Office also condemned the missile launch, accusing China of attempting to intimidate the international community. The office emphasized the importance of adhering to international norms and urged China to cease such provocative actions to maintain global peace and stability.
