Australian stand-in captain Steve Smith has chosen an all-pace attack for the fourth Ashes Test against England. The final 12 for the Test was announced after Australia’s last training session, with selectors still deciding on the Playing XI. The pitch at MCG, described as “quite furry” with 10mm of grass, influenced the decision to play four quicks and no spinner.
Smith explained that the pitch conditions, being cold and overcast, are likely to offer significant movement for the seam bowlers. Jhye Richardson, Michael Neser, and Brendan Doggett are competing for the final two spots in the pace attack. Richardson, if selected, will end a four-year absence from Test matches, having last played for the national red-ball side in December 2021.
The Australian captain expressed excitement about Richardson’s return, highlighting his skills and past performances against England in the Ashes. Smith also mentioned the team changes, with reserve wicketkeeper Josh Inglis making way for him after missing the previous Test due to illness. Captain Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon remain sidelined due to injuries.
Smith confirmed that Usman Khawaja and Alex Carey would bat at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively, while Cameron Green would bat at No. 7. The Australian XII for the fourth Test includes Travis Head, Jake Weatherald, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Usman Khawaja, Alex Carey, Cameron Green, Mitchell Starc, Scott Boland, Brendan Doggett, Michael Neser, and Jhye Richardson.
