Australia’s chief selector George Bailey shared updates on Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Tim David’s roles in the upcoming T20 World Cup. Cummins, the Test and ODI captain, will miss the tournament opener but is expected to join the squad after the second group-stage match against Zimbabwe on February 13. Meanwhile, Tim David is set to be ready for the start of the tournament despite a minor setback in his recovery from a hamstring injury.
Bailey mentioned that Cummins, who was rested for the T20Is against Pakistan, will not travel to Sri Lanka before the World Cup. He also confirmed that fast bowler Josh Hazlewood is on track to be available for the tournament opener. Cummins has been on rest since his appearance during the Ashes to help Australia secure the urn in Adelaide.
According to Bailey, the team has until January 31 to finalize their World Cup squad and has not yet selected any traveling reserves for the tournament. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that players are well-prepared to perform when they join the World Cup squad.
Bailey also addressed David’s recent setback in rehab, noting that it was a minor issue that did not result in any damage. Despite the setback, David is still on track for the tournament’s start. Hazlewood, who has been recovering from a hamstring injury and an Achilles issue, is progressing well and is expected to be ready for the tournament.
Regarding Steve Smith, Bailey mentioned that Smith’s name would be considered if a senior position becomes available. He praised Smith’s performance in the Big Bash League and highlighted his versatility in batting positions. Bailey expressed confidence in Smith’s ability to adapt to different roles if needed.
