Australia’s off-spinner Todd Murphy, despite his compromised eyesight, noted the lush greenery of the SCG pitch three days before the fifth Test, sparking discussions on spinners’ roles in the ongoing Ashes series.

Murphy, 25, may make his debut in Australia after featuring in seven overseas matches. However, uncertainty looms over his selection for Sydney, a ground historically favorable to spin, especially following his exclusion from the brief Melbourne Test.

Images reveal a predominantly green SCG pitch ahead of the fifth Ashes Test, hinting at Australia potentially opting for an all-pace bowling strategy once more.

“I’ve only seen it from afar, and my eyes aren’t obviously amazing, so it’s hard to pick out exactly what it’ll be,” Murphy shared with reporters at the SCG on Thursday. He emphasized the evolving nature of SCG’s pitch, once spin-friendly but now favoring pace bowlers.

Murphy, familiar with SCG due to his association with the Sydney Sixers, highlighted the shift towards seam-friendly conditions in Shield cricket, acknowledging the enduring significance of spin despite recent trends favoring pace.

Spinners have struggled in the Ashes series, claiming only nine wickets amid green tracks and lively conditions, raising doubts about their future role in Australian cricket. Nevertheless, Murphy remains optimistic about spin’s relevance, foreseeing its continued importance in the game’s evolution.
