Srinagar, Aug 12 (IANS) Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha has summoned the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly to meet on September 21, 2026.

The L-G summoned the Assembly on the recommendations of the Council of Ministers headed by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.

The L-G summoned the Assembly in accordance with the provisions of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019.

The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly is the unicameral legislature of the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

The Legislative Assembly is the legislative arm of the Government of Jammu and Kashmir. At present, it consists of 95 members, directly elected from 95 constituencies. The tenure of the Legislative Assembly is five years unless dissolved sooner.

Before the abrogation of Article 370 and 35A and the bifurcation of J&K into two union territories of J&K and Ladakh, the state had a bicameral legislature consisting of the upper house called the Legislative Council, and the lower house called the Legislative Assembly.

The Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, passed by the Parliament on August 5, 2019, replaced this with a unicameral legislature while also re-organising the state into a union territory. The current 13th assembly was elected in September and October 2024.

In the present assembly, the ruling National Conference has 41, Bharatiya Janata Party 29, Congress 6, Peoples Democratic Party 4, CPI M – 1, Awami Ittehad Party 1, Aam Aadmi Party 1, Peoples Conference 1 and independents 6.

Senior National Conference leader and former minister, Abdul Rahim Rather is the speaker of the assembly.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is the leader of the house, while Sunil Sharma of the Bharatiya Janata Party is the Leader of the Opposition in the J&K Assembly

The ruling National Conference government headed by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has the support of the Congress, the CPI M and four independents who have joined the National Conference.
