Nearly five years since Avadi became a municipal corporation, a significant portion of its residents still lack essential civic amenities. The area, spanning 65 sq km, has only managed to provide piped water supply and sewer connections to about 23 sq km, leaving many neighborhoods reliant on borewells and private water tankers for basic needs. The mismatch between urban growth and infrastructure development poses a major challenge for Avadi’s civic authorities.
Under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT), ongoing efforts are focused on improving water supply and sewerage systems in Avadi, Paruthipattu, and Thirumullaivoyal. Future plans involve extending these services to localities like Annanur and Pattabiram once additional government funding is secured. The corporation is also working on implementing an underground drainage system and cracking down on unauthorized sewage outlets to prevent contamination and urban flooding.
To address these issues, the corporation has proposed a total investment of Rs 1,002 crore for enhancing civic infrastructure, including the establishment of a new sewage treatment plant. This project aims to create a sustainable sewerage system that can cater to the city’s expansion. However, concerns persist among residents and consumer groups regarding project delays and the quality of execution, with issues like narrow drainage pipes and slow progress causing frustration.
As Avadi evolves from a suburban area to a bustling urban hub, the success of these infrastructure projects will be crucial in ensuring that all residents have equal access to essential civic services.
