As part of the Thai Pongal festivities, Avaniyapuram near Madurai is preparing to host its renowned Jallikattu event. The prizes for this year’s competition, including a new car for the top bull-tamer and a tractor for the best-performing bull owner, have been unveiled, adding to the anticipation surrounding the traditional sport.
State Minister Murthy inspected the event venue, ensuring safety measures, infrastructure readiness, and inter-departmental coordination. The focus is on a smooth and incident-free conduct of the event, with strict adherence to guidelines set by the Supreme Court and the Tamil Nadu government.
Madurai Municipal Police Commissioner Loganathan assured that the Avaniyapuram Jallikattu will adhere strictly to prescribed guidelines and operational protocols. Stringent safety and regulatory standards are being followed, with online tokens issued to bulls and bull-tamers for controlled entry and improved crowd management.
To handle medical emergencies, a 15-bed first-aid and treatment center has been established at the Avaniyapuram Government Middle School. A team of 100 doctors and 12 ambulances are on standby for immediate medical assistance. Veterinary screening of bulls is ongoing, with thorough checks ensuring fitness certification and health standards.
