Bal Jarallan, a remote village in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district, previously faced a lack of banking services, but this situation has significantly improved in recent years. The Central government’s National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM) scheme has played a pivotal role in this transformation.
The establishment of a Business Correspondent (BC) Unit in Bal Jarallan village under the NRLM scheme, in partnership with Jammu and Kashmir Bank, has revolutionized banking services in rural areas. This initiative has not only simplified banking processes for villagers but has also reduced the challenges of traveling long distances.
The BC Unit offers doorstep services including account opening, cash transactions, social security benefits, government scheme transactions, and various digital banking services. Beneficiaries of this scheme include elderly individuals, underprivileged families, students, Self Help Group (SHG) members, and other local residents who have experienced significant positive changes in their lives.
Mohammad Niyaz expressed, “Banking services were previously inaccessible here. The center has provided much-needed relief by offering assistance even on weekends.” Another beneficiary, Nazim Akhtar, highlighted the convenience now available, stating, “Previously, we faced difficulties accessing banking services, but now all services are accessible locally, including FDs, pensions, and insurance.”
In addition to enhancing financial inclusion, the BC Unit has also created sustainable livelihood opportunities for SHG members involved in its operations. Kamran Hani, program manager, emphasized the unit’s focus on catering to the local population excluded from traditional banking services and facilitating access to government welfare and social security services at their doorstep.
The BC Unit in Bal Jarallan is emerging as a successful model of Digital India and financial inclusion, showcasing the positive impact of the NRLM scheme in empowering rural communities to improve their economic well-being.
