The government of Balochistan in Pakistan is contemplating legal action against the Sindh government due to alleged unfair distribution of canal water. Despite improved river flows, Sindh has reportedly been providing Balochistan with 46% less water than its allocated share, leading to a significant water shortage in Balochistan. This has prompted Balochistan to consider legal recourse against Sindh.
Balochistan’s Irrigation Minister expressed concern over the continued reduction in canal water share by Sindh, exacerbating the water crisis in the province. Efforts to address the issue through meetings and written communications with relevant authorities have not yielded results, prompting Balochistan to consider legal action. Balochistan Chief Minister has been in discussions with his Sindh counterpart regarding the water supply issue.
A report earlier this year highlighted a looming water crisis in Balochistan, compounded by a rapid population growth that poses a threat to the province’s fragile ecology. The population of Balochistan has surged, with projections indicating a substantial increase in the coming years. The province’s overreliance on groundwater, coupled with limited access to canal water, has intensified the water scarcity issue in Balochistan.
