Bangladesh’s anti-corruption agency has strongly criticized the shooting incident that targeted journalists in Khulna city, labeling it an assault on independent journalism and press freedom. Gunmen fired at four journalists in Khulna on July 15 while they were relaxing outside a tea stall after work. Among the injured was Awal Sheikh, a correspondent for the Bangladeshi daily “The Business Standard,” who suffered bullet splinter injuries.
Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) released a statement expressing concern over the journalists’ reluctance to file a case, highlighting a climate of fear and distrust in the authorities. The organization urged for a prompt, unbiased investigation to identify and hold accountable those responsible for the attack.
TIB Executive Director Iftekharuzzaman emphasized the need for a thorough investigation to uncover the motives behind the attack and ensure justice for both the perpetrators and masterminds. He stressed the importance of not only filing a case but also determining the instigators behind the assault on journalists, emphasizing the risk of impunity if left unresolved.
Expressing serious apprehension over the incident, Iftekharuzzaman pointed out the prevailing culture of fear and insecurity within the journalism community in Bangladesh. He called for immediate action by authorities to safeguard journalists, conduct credible investigations, and ensure accountability for any attacks against them.
