Chief Adviser of the government of Bangladesh, Professor Muhammad Yunus, reiterated his dedication to conducting the country’s general elections on February 12. He assured that the Interim government is fully prepared to ensure a transparent, fair, and peaceful voting process. Professor Yunus expressed the nation’s eagerness to exercise their voting rights, which had been compromised during the autocratic regime’s rule.
The Chief Adviser engaged in a telephone conversation with Sergio Gor, the US Special Envoy for South and Central Asia, discussing various topics for about half an hour. Their dialogue encompassed trade and tariff negotiations between Bangladesh and the United States, the upcoming general election, the country’s democratic transition, and the tragic death of young Bangladeshi political activist Sharif Osman Hadi. Sergio Gor, also the US Ambassador to India, commended Professor Yunus for his leadership in recent tariff negotiations.
During the conversation, it was highlighted that Bangladesh successfully negotiated a reduction in US reciprocal tariffs on Bangladeshi goods to 20 percent, a significant accomplishment for the country’s trade sector. Chief Adviser Yunus raised concerns about supporters of the deposed autocratic regime allegedly investing substantial sums to disrupt the electoral process, with their fugitive leader inciting violence. He assured that the interim government is fully equipped to address any obstacles and ensure a smooth electoral process.
With approximately 50 days remaining until the election, Chief Adviser Yunus emphasized the government’s commitment to conducting a free, fair, and peaceful election, aiming to make it a noteworthy event. The call also included the presence of Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashiruddin, National Security Adviser Dr. Khalilur Rahman, and SDG Coordinator and Senior Secretary Lamiya Morshed.
