Bangladesh’s cricketers are considering boycotting Bangladesh Premier League matches due to objections over remarks made by a senior board official regarding the venues for their T20 World Cup games. The Cricketers’ Welfare Association of Bangladesh criticized the comments by Bangladesh Cricket Board Finance Committee chairman M. Nazmul Islam, stating that they were disrespectful to the players.
M. Nazmul Islam had labeled former captain Tamim Iqbal as an “Indian agent” after Iqbal suggested discussions with the ICC and BCCI regarding the T20 World Cup venue dispute. Islam further mentioned that the board would not face financial consequences if Bangladesh chose not to participate in the T20 World Cup, as per his statements to the media.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board responded to the situation by disapproving of Islam’s comments, emphasizing that they do not reflect the board’s values. The board expressed regret for any remarks considered inappropriate, offensive, or hurtful, clarifying that individual statements not officially communicated do not represent the board’s stance.
The BCB also warned of potential disciplinary measures against individuals displaying disrespect towards cricketers or damaging the reputation of Bangladesh cricket. They reiterated their unwavering support for all cricketers, past and present, highlighting that player welfare is a top priority for the board.
