Bangladesh’s Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmud acknowledged that the country is experiencing disruptions in its normal fuel supply system due to a surge in consumer demand. Mahmud explained that fuel at petrol pumps is depleting faster than usual, leading to shortages. He highlighted that the demand for fuel has risen significantly, with the amount sold in a day now being exhausted within a few hours.
Mahmud attributed the supply challenges to delays in refilling tankers from depots and transporting fuel to pumps, especially in the early hours. He emphasized that while there is no actual shortage, the process of replenishing fuel takes time, causing temporary scarcities. The minister also noted that the existing supply mechanisms are strained due to the high number of people crowding petrol pumps, exacerbating the situation.
In response to queries about potential fuel rationing, Mahmud refrained from confirming any immediate plans, urging the public to avoid hoarding fuel. He cautioned against purchasing excessive quantities, as this behavior further disrupts the supply chain. Meanwhile, reports of fuel shortages at filling stations in Khulna city have inconvenienced commuters, with some struggling to find fuel despite visiting multiple stations.
