Bangladesh’s Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus is under scrutiny for allegedly permitting Islamist radicals, jihadists, and terrorists to take advantage of the power vacuum in the country post the removal of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. This has led to a surge in violence against religious minorities, women, and secular voices, as highlighted in a recent report.

The interim government led by Yunus has been criticized for actively supporting radical groups responsible for the persecution of minorities in Bangladesh. A report from the Gatestone Institute in New York has urged the Trump administration to designate Bangladesh’s radical Islamist party Jamaat-e-Islami as a Foreign Terrorist Organization and to hold Yunus accountable for his actions.

Recent events, such as an attack on the Indian High Commission’s office in Dhaka by an Islamist group, have raised concerns about the deteriorating security situation in Bangladesh. The report also mentioned the temporary closure of the Indian Visa Application Centre in Dhaka following inflammatory anti-India statements and threats to India’s High Commission.

The report further highlighted a tragic incident where an elderly Hindu couple was found brutally murdered in Rangpur city, Bangladesh. Despite the victims being the parents of two police officers, no arrests have been made in connection with the case. This incident underscores the growing concerns over the safety of minorities in the country.

Under Yunus’s leadership, Bangladesh has witnessed a surge in Islamic radicalization and a spike in attacks targeting minorities, especially Hindus. The Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council documented over 2,000 incidents of violence against minorities within a short period, including murders, rapes, harassment of women, and attacks on Hindu temples.

Despite reports of escalating violence against minorities, Yunus has dismissed these accounts as “exaggerated propaganda.” Minority rights groups have raised alarm over the increasing communal violence in Bangladesh, highlighting the challenges faced by minority communities in the country.
