The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its alliance have declared victory in the 13th parliamentary elections, winning 210 seats according to unofficial results. The BNP-led alliance’s triumph paves the way for a new government led by BNP, with party chairman Tarique Rahman expected to assume leadership, marking the return of a male Prime Minister in Bangladesh after nearly 35 years. The unofficial results were announced following the vote count on Thursday night, revealing victories in various constituencies.
Citing party sources, Bangladeshi Bengali Daily, Jugantor, reported that Tarique Rahman is poised to lead the government, with unofficial results showing his win in the Dhaka-17 constituency by securing 72,699 votes, defeating his closest rival. Dhaka Divisional Commissioner (Returning Officer) Sharaf Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury declared the results on Friday morning, confirming Tarique’s victory by a margin of 4,399 votes. Additionally, Tarique was unofficially elected from the Bogra-6 constituency, receiving 216,284 votes from 150 centers, further solidifying his position.
Tarique Rahman, son of former Bangladeshi President Gen. Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, expressed confidence in his party’s victory after casting his vote in the national election. He emphasized the anticipation of the Bangladeshi people for this moment and remained optimistic about his party’s success. Tarique, who took over the BNP leadership following his mother’s death, is now poised to lead the nation, continuing the political legacy of his family.
