Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s acting chairman, Tarique Rahman, is set to return to Dhaka on Thursday, as reported by local media. He will be accompanied by his wife and daughter on a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight from London’s Heathrow Airport. Upon arrival, Rahman plans to address party supporters, visit his mother Khaleda Zia in the hospital, and register as a voter on December 27.
Shafiqul Alam, Press Secretary to Bangladesh’s Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus, expressed the interim government’s support for Rahman’s homecoming. Security arrangements have been coordinated with BNP to ensure a safe return for Rahman, with over 100,000 BNP supporters expected to welcome him in Dhaka. Rahman’s return coincides with the upcoming national parliamentary election scheduled for February 12 next year.
Analysts anticipate that Rahman’s return and potential participation in the elections could impact Bangladesh’s political landscape. The country has been experiencing unrest, and Rahman’s presence may further escalate tensions. His return follows his recent acquittal in significant cases and comes at a critical juncture for Bangladesh’s political future.
