Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman marked March 25, 1971, as Genocide Day, recalling it as a pre-planned massacre and a dark chapter in the nation’s history. He paid tribute to the martyrs who lost their lives during the crackdown by Pakistani forces. Tarique emphasized the brutality of the events, highlighting the heinous genocide unleashed by Pakistani occupation forces under “Operation Searchlight.”
President Mohammed Shahabuddin echoed the sentiments, describing the same date as the most brutal and sorrowful period in Bangladesh’s history. He condemned the indiscriminate massacres carried out by Pakistani forces on unarmed civilians during the Operation Search Light. Shahabuddin urged all Bangladeshis, regardless of differences, to unite in patriotism to realize the ideals of the 1971 Liberation War martyrs.
Both leaders emphasized the importance of upholding the values of the Liberation War, promoting equality, human dignity, and social justice in the country. They called for collective efforts to build a just, prosperous, self-reliant, and democratic Bangladesh, in honor of the sacrifices made by the martyrs.
