Bangladesh recorded two additional dengue-related deaths within 24 hours, bringing the total fatalities from the disease to nine in 2026. The Directorate General of Health Services reported that 220 more individuals were hospitalized with viral fever during this period, raising the total infections to 4,900. The recent deaths occurred in Barishal division and the Dhaka South City Corporation area, as per the United News of Bangladesh.
Bangladesh’s health authorities disclosed that 60% of dengue patients in 2026 are male, while 40% are female. In 2025, the country reported 102,861 dengue cases and 413 deaths from the disease. The Health Minister of Bangladesh, Sardar Sakhawat Husain, announced on June 2 that the government will not initiate a dengue vaccination campaign at this stage, citing global vaccine acceptance concerns.
Husain emphasized that the decision was made after discussions with the Prime Minister and will involve consultations with the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF. He clarified that until the vaccine gains global recognition and approval, the government will refrain from implementing a vaccination program. Dengue, caused by the dengue virus transmitted through mosquito bites, can lead to severe cases requiring hospitalization and, in some instances, can be fatal.
