A Bangladeshi cargo vessel named ‘MV Tamjid and Nasir’ sank in the Muriganga River in West Bengal’s South 24 Paraganas district on January 21. The incident took place near Kachuberia, and all 12 sailors aboard were rescued without harm. The vessel was transporting goods from Kolkata port to Bangladesh when it encountered a mechanical malfunction, leading to its sinking.

The Superintendent of Police of Sundarbans Police District, Koteswara Rao, reported that the cargo ship faced engine failure between Ghoramara Island and Kachuberia. The Sagar police promptly responded to the distress call and successfully saved all 12 individuals on board. Following a preliminary investigation, it was determined that the ship’s engine malfunctioned, causing it to lose control and succumb to the river’s strong currents.

The sailors onboard quickly sought assistance upon noticing a crack in the ship’s lower part, resulting in water leakage. The Sagar police station acted swiftly, rescuing the twelve Bangladeshi nationals. All crew members were safely rescued, and there were no casualties reported. The rescued sailors received necessary first aid and are currently accommodated at a shelter under Gangasagar Police Station, where provisions for food and water have been made. Efforts are underway to coordinate with Bangladeshi authorities for their repatriation. An investigation has been initiated to determine the cargo contents and assess any potential environmental impact from the incident.
