A 55-year-old Bangladeshi Hindu man, Sati Rajbanshi, is stuck in no-man’s land along the India-Bangladesh border in Meghalaya’s South West Garo Hills district. Rajbanshi, a resident of Chalna village in Bangladesh, has been stranded in the Nandir Char sector near Mahendraganj since Wednesday due to a standoff between India’s Border Security Force (BSF) and the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
Efforts to resolve the issue through flag meetings between the two border forces have failed, leaving Rajbanshi in a disputed stretch between the countries. Allegations suggest that Bangladeshi authorities attempted to push Rajbanshi into Indian territory, but the BSF denied facilitating any border crossing and maintained that the man is a Bangladeshi national.
BSF sources claim that Rajbanshi, belonging to the Hindu minority community in Bangladesh, may have been targeted deliberately. Similar incidents along the India-Bangladesh border have been reported, allegedly to create artificial tensions. The incident occurs amidst heightened surveillance to prevent illegal infiltration along the eastern frontier.
