A local court in Bhubaneswar has sentenced nine Bangladeshi nationals to two years of rigorous imprisonment for entering India without proper documents. They were also fined Rs 10,000 each, with an additional three months of imprisonment if the fine is not paid. The individuals were apprehended by the Special Task Force of Odisha Police at Bhubaneswar Railway Station based on reliable information.
Police sources reported that the Bangladeshi nationals, including a juvenile, were caught on March 8, 2025. They failed to produce passports, visas, or any valid travel documents during interrogation. The group confessed to entering India clandestinely through Assam without proper authorization, concealing their real identities.
The accused were arrested for violating India’s immigration laws after an investigation and charge sheet submission. The prosecution presented six witnesses and 14 relevant documents during the trial. The juvenile involved in the case was sent to a correctional home in Berhampur as per the Juvenile Justice Board’s orders.
The Odisha government has been actively identifying and deporting illegally residing Bangladeshi nationals in the state. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi disclosed in December 2025 that 51 such immigrants were identified since the BJP-led government took office in June 2024.
