Bangladesh’s Awami League has strongly criticized the killing of a party activist in Jashore district, emphasizing concerns over political violence and human rights protection in the country. The incident involved the death of a 40-year-old local Jubo League leader, Jewel Ahmed Rana, following an attack in Chaugachha upazila in Jashore. His family has accused Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) members of being behind the assault.
Expressing deep worry over the situation, the Awami League highlighted the importance of the right to life, a fundamental human right safeguarded by Bangladesh’s Constitution and international laws. They called for a thorough, unbiased investigation into the brutal attack and stressed the need for justice and transparency in handling such cases.
The Awami League also raised concerns about retaliatory violence during political transitions in Bangladesh, citing warnings from human rights defenders. They emphasized the detrimental impact of politically motivated attacks on the rule of law and community well-being. The victim’s family alleged that Jewel Rana was left unaided while injured and that his wife was attacked when she tried to protect him.
The party underscored the significance of ensuring equal legal protection for all citizens regardless of their political affiliations. They emphasized the need for justice, accountability, and respect for human rights to prevent further violence and uphold democratic values in Bangladesh. The Awami League stressed that every citizen, irrespective of party allegiance, deserves equal protection of life, security, and political freedoms.
