Bangladesh’s Awami League has expressed deep concern regarding the deaths of 61 inmates in prisons across the country in the first half of 2026. This trend has raised alarms as it resembles the high prison death toll during the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)-Jamaat-e-Islami alliance government from 2001 to 2006.
The Dhaka-based rights group Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) reported that 61 individuals died in jail custody in Bangladesh between January and June 2026. Among them, 37 were under-trial prisoners, and 24 were convicted inmates.
Dhaka recorded the highest number of custodial deaths among all administrative divisions, with 36 cases, including 17 under-trial prisoners and 19 convicted inmates.
Awami League condemned these deaths, emphasizing that the safety of under-trial detainees is the state’s responsibility until their trials are concluded. The party highlighted that these deaths have created a sense of uncertainty for individuals in custody, regardless of their guilt or innocence.
