With the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) emerging victorious in the 13th Parliamentary election, discussions are underway regarding the next President of Bangladesh. Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain and Nazrul Islam Khan, both BNP Standing Committee members, are being considered for the role. Other potential candidates include Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Abdul Moyeen Khan, as reported by local media outlets.
The BNP, led by Chairman Tarique Rahman, secured 209 seats in the recent election. The party is now preparing for the swearing-in of newly elected members of parliament and the formation of the cabinet. Internal discussions within the party are also focusing on the appointment of the next President, with Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain being a favored choice.
Current President Mohammad Shahabuddin is expected to resign following the formation of the new government. Shahabuddin, who was elected unopposed in 2023, expressed his intention to step down in a recent interview. The upcoming presidential election, which is seen as a formality for the BNP, will involve members of parliament voting for the new President.
Experts warn of challenges ahead for Bangladesh under Rahman’s leadership, including addressing unrest and rising Islamist extremism. The nation aims to move past the issues that characterized the previous interim government’s tenure.
